When New Media was New: Course
Led by Charlie Gere, Lecturer at Birkbeck College and author of
Digital Culture (Reaktion Books, 2002)
Despite a history stretching back to the 1950s, art made using new
media has largely been neglected by the mainstream art world. However,
over the last few decades, a number of curators have gone to lengths
to present and discuss this work. In addition to this series of
seminars, on three Tuesday evenings distinguished speakers will
be at Tate Modern reflecting on the issues they have encountered
in curating new media art (see talks
& discussions).
Jasia Reichardt was curator of Cybernetic Serendipity
at the ICA in 1968 as well as many other exhibitions involving new
media and technologies. Christiane Paul is Adjunct Curator of New
Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Arts and author of
the recent book Digital Art, while Peter Weibel, previously
in charge of Ars Electronica, the Austrian new media arts
festival, is now Director of ZKM, the renowned German art and media
centre. These speakers will be joined by other contributors to lead
this Wednesday afternoon series of research seminars based around
the themes of 'Cybernetics', 'Telematics' and 'Performance'.
These seminars are recommended for those with some existing knowledge
of the fields of new media or curatorial practice.
