The advent of digital technology is arguably one of the most important developments affecting contemporary art. Digital media can transform the way that artists make work, not only providing new tools to enhance existing processes but also entirely new ways of making artworks. Such forms of creative output reinforce the realisation that arts practices are constantly expanding and finding new forms of expression.

This 5-session course looks at a range of approaches to digital art. It explores how artists are working with key concepts, such as interactivity, virtuality, data manipulation, online networking and software creation. It also addresses how such work can operate within galleries and conventional arts institutions and how audiences can access it.

This course continues as an MA module at the University of Westminster after the sessions at Tate Modern. Participants interested in taking the module can enrol as external students - see www.carte.org.uk.
