Changing
Lives of Objects focussed on the notion of transformation. We looked
at Bill Woodrow's use of converting metal from car doors into an elephant's
head and a guitar made from a washing machine - comparing these to
other processes of metamorphoses -and interpreted the language in
the work and its sociopolitical meanings. This
led into the work by Fischli and Weiss in which the artists had remade
the entire contents of their studio and installed them in the gallery.
Everything is carved from polyurethane foam and painted to look like
the original item. We compared this work with other forms of camouflage
and cloning and the use of mimicry. Arising out of these discussions
the group (of 6 and 7 year olds) constructed their own objects of
transformation in the Maculay Studio at Tate Modern and documented
their working processes and responses to the works of art with sound
and animation. Press on the names opposite to view the outcomes.
