Katherine and Alex Joyce (played to perfection by Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders) are a bored English couple who try and reconcile their faltering relationship while on holiday driving through Italy. As the story unfolds, Alex remains bored and sarcastic while Katherine experiences a psychological awakening in a new world of ancient ruins and natural landscapes.
