The Road (La Strada)
(The Road)
Federico Fellini, Italy 1954, 94’
Giulietta Masina plays Gelsomina, a naïve waif whose innocence provides a direct line to life’s eternal mysteries. She is sold into slavery to play a clown to travelling showman Zampano, played by Anthony Quinn, who exploits her mercilessly. Set in the bleak uplands of central Italy, La Strada is a magical story of human cruelty, loneliness and lost innocence.
The bfi & Tate: Kings of the Road film series is programmed to reflect some of the themes in the Robert Frank: Storylines exhibition.
