An injured and comatose bricklayer is accompanied from Lisbon to his home in Cape Verde by a young Portuguese nurse, who becomes increasingly involved with the mysterious community of Fogo. In Tarrafal the inequities of the past and the injustice of the present meet in a plea for memory and resilience for migrant labourers forced to leave the country.
