Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

Led by philosopher and historian Nick Lambrianou with musician and writer Seth Kim-Cohen
Saturday 10 September 2005, 10.30–17.00

Minimalism, serialism and sample-based music are just a few of the aliases under which repetition has skulked across international, genre and media borders during the last half-century. This study day will explore the persistence of repetition in relation to the Open Systems: Rethinking Art c.1970 exhibition. Artists such as Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, Mel Bochner, Dan Graham and Adrian Piper all capitalised on repetition as both generative mechanism and justifying aesthetic philosophy. Tutors explore their work in relation to early 1970s literature, philosophy, politics and music, investigating how the broader cultural milieu contributed to and borrowed from the work presented in the exhibition.
