The Art of the Postcard

Led by Roger Hargreaves, National Portrait Gallery, and Sophie Howarth, Tate Modern
Saturday 13 November 2004, 10.30–13.00
Saturday 4 December 2004, 10.30–13.30

This two-session workshop will explore the history of the postcard and its changing place within visual culture. When many of its functions are being eclipsed by e-mail and SMS, we will ask why the postcard remains essential in the circulation of images and memories. Tutors will show collections of postcards amassed by artists including  Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Tom Phillips and Martin Parr, as well as postcard-based artworks by Susan Hiller, Tacita Dean and many others, drawing out relationships between text and image, authorship and ownership, privacy and publicity. Participants will be asked to collect, make, send and receive a variety of postcards between the sessions, establishing a network of correspondences that will inform the groups’ discussion.
