The senses are key to our appreciation of art. In this course, through a mixture of group discussion and gallery-based activity using the Tate collection, participants will explore a range of questions surrounding the senses and how they transform our relationship to art. Topics will include: taste as physical experience and metaphor for appreciating art; smell and how it affects our visual experiences; sound art; the implications of touching and not being able to touch art; visual and non-visual aspects of seeing. No prior knowledge of philosophy, psychology or art history is necessary.
