Saturdays 10 April and 17 April 2010, 13.30–17.30

Taking inspiration from Arshile Gorky's artistic journey from figurative painting to abstraction, this exciting two-day workshop will create a parallel voyage, this time across the soundscapes of language and voice art.

The potential of language and voice and their uses will be explored and discussed through a wide range of examples, including contemporary art and music as well as mainstream culture and current affairs. The renowned voice artist Mikhail Karikis will discuss his own practice and methods (See more of his work on MySpace). There will then be space for the workshop participants to create and develop new material and build confidence in discovering the potential of our voices.

You will have an opportunity to take part in different vocal exercises and language experiments through listening and sharing, introducing you to enjoyable tools and practices that will allow you to engage and work with the voice and language in new and imaginative ways.

The second day of the workshop will culminate in an optional short group performance for those who wish to participate.

No vocal training necessary. Singers, poets and anyone interested in sound and language are welcome.
