About the Garden

Come and enjoy the Community Garden, it is a space especially for local people who live within walking distance of the gallery and who may not have a lot of outdoor space! Tate Modern, Bankside Open Spaces Trust, a steering group and many local residents have helped to plant, dig and transform the space in to a beautiful community garden. Local people were invited by Magic Me (an organisation that provides intergenerational arts activities) to share their ideas for the space and many of these were included in a plan for the garden which was created by garden designer Lucy Williams. Environmental issues
Supporting environmentally friendly practices has been a very important consideration throughout the development of the garden. A compost bin has been installed in the garden and offers a great opportunity to recycle all sorts of different waste which can then be used to improve the soil in the space. All of the furniture in the garden such as the bridge, shelter and shed has been made from wood (and trees that have died of natural causes) or with recycled materials such as plastics.

Wildlife
The garden has a special micro climate which is suitable for encouraging all sorts of different wildlife species. The pond has become the home to lots of insects and dragon flies and newts. A log book recording the observations in the garden has proved a useful tool to document the wildlife living in the garden.

Local Schools and Families
Working with local families and schools to enjoy the garden is very important and regular events are organised such as monthly parent and toddler workshops and after school events.
