Freud established his own artistic identity in meticulously executed realist works, imbued with a pervasive mood of alienation. Girl with a White Dog 1950-1 presents a virtuoso handling of fabrics and textures. Perhaps of more enduring interest is the expressive, staged quality of the composition. It establishes a highly charged situation in which the artist is able to explore formal and optical problems.
