P.P.G. Sun-Proof Drawing No. 1 , 1965
Facsimile of Photocopy
30 x 22 cm
Richard L. Nelson Gallery and The Fine Arts Collection, University of California, Davis

True to its title, this drawing is based on a 1965 colour chart for Pittsburgh Paint's Sun-Proof brand of exterior house paint. As a Master of Fine Arts student at the University of California in Davis, Nauman took the colour chart to a copy machine in the school library and photocopied it. This duplicate reduced the chart's wide range of colours to a variety of grays, which over time have faded to the brown shades that are visible today.
