Katharina Fritsch
Works in the exhibition
Eight Paintings with Eight Colors, 1990-1991
Wood, foil, lacquer, untreated cotton cloth, and paint
Eight parts, each: 140 x 100 x 8 cm
Collection K20K21 Kunstsammlung, Düsseldorf
These works are the result of Fritsch's desire to 'make sculptures that are paintings and paintings that are sculptures.' The sprayed-on colour that designates both paintings and frames comes in the vocabulary of eight colours that make up virtually all of her work. The special role colour plays in Fritsch's work has roots in her childhood visits to her grandfather, a salesman for Faber-Castell art supplies, whose garage was well-stocked with his wares.
