The ordinary fluorescent bulb was Flavin’s sole sculptural material, and ten widely available, standardised bulb colours made up his entire palette. Flavin dedicated this series to his longtime friend Donald Judd. Both artists were considered leading figures of Minimal art, but the sensuous effects they achieved with colour, especially toward the end of their lives, proves how misleading the term Minimalist can be.
