Dine notes that his colour chart paintings of the early 1960s are highly autobiographical. They have their origin in his father's and grandfather's hardware stores, where he played and worked in his youth, and collected the colour charts from Red Devil and other paint companies. The highly personal tone of these paintings is manifest in the messy lettering, drips, and misspellings that accompany their grids of glossy colour.
