Works in the exhibition
Primary Time, 1974
Colour video, silent, 26 minutes
Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam
Ader called this video 'a new work about [Piet] Mondrian', the great Dutch modernist who famously limited his palette to red, yellow, blue, black and white. Ader's fumbling arrangement and rearrangement of homely flowers is both a backhanded salute to Mondrian – a master composer who expunged nature from his Neo-Plastic paintings – and a declaration of his independence from the utopian purity of modernism.
