Documentary - Time - Memory
One day Conference
Chair: Dr Steven Gartside (MIRIAD)
Can documents make memories?
How does documentary make, shape and alter history?
Can we locate truth within a document?
Leading voices come together to discuss 'documentary' in all its complexity. Professor Nigel Warburton (OU) and David Campany (University of Westminster) discuss the reliability versus the instability of documentary. Professor Annette Kuhn (UCLAN) examines the limits and tensions between the documentary and memory. Dr Ben Highmore (UWE Bristol) and Camilla Brown of the Photographers Gallery, trace the history of documentary into contemporary art. All grapple with documentaries ability to make the complex seem simple and its power to make meanings.
