Research Forum: Gendered Gestures

Thursday 28 February 2008, 14.00–18.00

Niki de Saint Phalle’s Shooting Paintings explored the idea of the violent gesture in abstract art, in what can be read as a parody of the machismo of action painting. Using de Saint Phalle’s work as a starting point, this postgraduate research forum explores the gendered gestures of art.  What is it in an artistic trace that makes a work embody notions of femininity or masculinity?  How do these gestures fit into societal power structures of everyday life between men and women?

Moderated by Catherine Marcangeli, Senior Lecturer in British and American studies, Paris University.
