Re-view: Exploring Twentieth Century Art
This informal introductory course offers a new way of looking at modern and contemporary art. It explores the dramatic changes that have taken place in the art world from the late 1800s to today, in the context of Tate Liverpool's exciting new collection display, The Twentieth Century: How it Looked and How it Felt. The course deals with 'the subject', 'the object' and 'the artist' respectively over the course of the year and is led by art historians. While an illustrated discussion–based presentation is given each week, most of the course takes place in the galleries with the work on display. All welcome. No experience necessary.
The second term of the course looks at the changing status of 'the object' in art from the late 20th century to the present day. It considers the radical changes artists have made in their choice of materials and technique over the last 100 years. A major part of this will be to assess developments in technology available to artists over the last century including photography, video and other forms of new media and how these developments have affected the direction art has taken. It will also look at the impact these changes have had on the way art is displayed and viewed.
