Introduction to Tate Modern

Over a disposable cup of juice (preferably plastic and with ridges, see activity 3), introduce project, journals and general structure. Discuss how art is organised and displayed in various museums and galleries we have been to. Introduce Tate Modern's non-chronological, thematic approach. Discuss possible benefits or problems of this approach.


Introduce overarching theme of History, History as latin for story. History as telling a story.


Go to history, memory, still life suite.

  • To engage pupils in looking at and discussing contemporary art in the gallery environment.
  • To explore general understandings of the term 'history', and how history is represented through the display of art in museums and galleries.
