About this artwork

This is a picture of a painting within a painting. If you look closely you will see that there is an oval frame surrounding the man; this is a painting of the artist, William Hogarth. Outside the frame there is a dog, books and a painters’ palette.

The dog is a pug; Hogarth loved pugs because he thought they looked a bit like him. Do you think the dog looks like him? The dog’s name was Trump and he belonged to Hogarth. Hogarth also included Trump in some of his other paintings.

This painting is on display at Tate Britain.
