We decided to find out about the title name of our school. We wanted to know who John King was and what he did for the local community. That linked us to mining and working underground. We invited an ex miner to come and talk to us about his experiences. We followed that up with lots of imitations of working underground - creatively based work. The project was very successful with all the children joining in enthusiastically. We did this project in addition to our usual curriculum. We are going to display our work in school for everyone to learn about John King and the miners in Pinxton.

Final Thoughts

Students:
"It was nice because everyone worked hard." Cory Joe
"It was scary underground." Kira
"Some mines are cold, and some are hot where they have dug deeper." George
"I liked it when it was all dark." Kyle
"We enjoyed pretending to go under the ground." Abbie
"We made an underground place." Kaya
"We found out that John King invented a special hook." Bethany

Teacher:
Our project has been a wonderful opportunity to learn more about John King and the miners of Pinxton. The children joined in with a variety of experiences to help them think about what it would be like to work underground all day. The children enjoyed taking photographs and showing everyone their art work on the interactive whiteboard.

The project was a huge success. Our aim was to be wholly creative, and that is just what we did. This project was a wonderful indulgence! All the children and adults involved delved deep into their imaginations. It was a project enjoyed by all and the learning was extensive.
