What We Did

The art club chose which of the activities they would like to complete. Activities A (Local Monuments) and G (Our Natural Area) were chosen. A year 7 class worked on activity B (Local Legends).

The art club completed a brainstorm about local landmarks and monuments. The group then chose monuments to work from to complete drawings and paintings. Some girls took photos of landmarks to make digital 'joiners'. Other girls completed research about the local lighthouse.

The focus of the natural area activity was on Dartmoor. The girls wrote a poem about the moors and a few girls completed lino prints of some animals found on Dartmoor. Another girl completed some drawings of animals found in the local area whilst others completed landscape paintings of scenes from Dartmoor from secondary sources.

The year 7 class researched myths and legends on Dartmoor to help them work on poems, stories and lino prints about the topic.

The Plymouth Hoe
by Chloe and Lucy, age 14

Here resides the Plymouth hoe,
From where you can see boats come and go.

Or you could climb up smeton's tower,
And watch the view for many an hour.

Then again you could visit the memorial from the war,
And remember that we're what those soldiers died for.

You can splash about in Tinside pool,
And even on the hottest day it is very cool.

Or if you prefer to go swimming for free,
Then you can jump from the rocks right into the sea.

Or if the music gigs are more your thing,
Then in the summer you can come along and sing.

But if what you really like are crazy rides from the fair,
Come along with your friends and let down your hair.

If the fun gets too much and you just want to cool down,
Then you can just take a wander straight into the town.

A day at the Hoe is never what it seems,
All year round there are many different themes.

If you don't believe me why don't you come and see,
There are many things to do here just for you and me!

On Dartmoor
by Erin and Harriet, age 12

On Dartmoor, there's plenty to see,
On Dartmoor, there's no bad places to be,
On Dartmoor, there may not always be sun,
But on Dartmoor you'll always have more fun.

It's a nice place to live,
It's a fun place to visit,
It's a great place to be,
Because it's really exquisite.

On Dartmoor, there's plenty of green,
On Dartmoor, there's such a lovely scene,
On Dartmoor you can see beyond,
And on Dartmoor you will be so fond.

It's a nice place to live,
It's a fun place to visit,
It's a great place to be,
Because it's really exquisite

Plymouth by Yanqing, age 13

A city by the sea,
Where the cries of the gulls
Are very special to me,
And gently lulls
My senses. I sat
With the wind in my face,
The sun on my hat,
In my little space.
The sound
Of the waves on the shore,
And the ferry, bound
For France once more.
Plymouth, a beautiful city,
Beside the deep clear
Sea, and I pity
All those who'd never been here.
Plymouth
by Hayley, age14

Lazing on the waterfront,
Playing in the park,
Having ice-creams on the Hoe,
And go to see a shark

See tropical fish and eels
All at the aquarium,
Go to the fudge shop and then just go
And sunbathe down the Barbican.

Go shopping with your mates,
Go to the ABC,
Go swimming at the Pavillions
Or ice-skating with me!

Final Thoughts

Students: We used ICT to make a PowerPoint presentation that shows all of our work for the project. We drew from photographs of the local area that were projected on to a screen in the art room. We also arranged digital photos in PowerPoint to create a collage image of local landmarks. We have learned a lot about the local area, we never realised how beautiful it is. There are many more different animals in the area than we thought and we have started to appreciate the landmarks much more.

Teacher: The activites enabled students to explore and develop ideas about the local area, to investigate and make and variety of outcomes, and to gain knowledge and understanding about the local area and various landscape artists. This project was really enjoyed by the students who began to look at the local area in a new and exciting way.
