Tate St Ives - Recommended routes – 24 May to 21 September 2008
Explore Tate St Ives and the current exhibitions...
- Head straight up the stairs...
- Sail into Gallery 1 and find three constructions by Peter Lanyon, what materials has the artist used and where could he have found them?
- Porthleven is a small Cornish Fishing village. What does the artwork tell you about the place it is inspired by?
- Make a link to another artwork in this room, it might be similar or different, what would they say to each other if they could speak?
- Through to Lower Gallery 2 and discover St Ives past and present. Look out for Uplands and Sky, who's it painted by? It’s a view of the moor above the town.
- Spot other views of St Ives that are over 100 years old. Step inside a painting and describe what you see.
- Spot more views of St Ives in the Studio. Painting in the open air became popular in England and France 150 years ago. Artists would use sketching to capture ideas about colour, space and light in the landscape, just like you might use a photograph today. If these were your sketches, what would your painting look like?
- Before you leave the Lower Gallery take a look at the view!
- In Upper Gallery 2 discover Mask-Filters made by Adam Chodzko, imagine the view through one and design your own carnival, where would it be and what would happen? Look at Adam's Design for a Carnival for some ideas.
- What materials does Adam use to make art? Before you leave find the Test-Tone for Landscape records (these are playing in the Loggia), what are there sleeves made from?
- Find the sequins positioned by ants on your way through the Apse... How has this image been made?
- Watch Plan for a Spell in Gallery 3. It is a mixture of sounds, images and words that randomly come together on a loop. There is no beginning or end, the scenes roll together continuously. Does the film tell a story? Who are the characters?
- What is the 'plan' and what is the 'spell'?
- Invent your own plan for a spell... what would happen if it works?
- In Gallery 4 you'll find lots of different artworks by Adam. Look out for Night Shift, what do the different coloured routes map? How do they link to the images of animals around them?
- Spot the posters – what would happen at the meetings they advertise?
- Find some more films made by Adam in Gallery 5. What stories are happening here?
- Down in the Heron Mall step inside Borrowed Cold Lodge and describe what you see, can you find out where these garments came from? What do galleries lend and borrow to make exhibitions?
- A recipe of different cold-weather, protective clothing makes Borrowed Cold Lodge, in response to the Heron Window, can you see any connections between the display and the window?
- Why would this collection be kept here in the summer months?
- Invent your own recipe for a collection, what would you borrow to make it and where would it be displayed?
- Listen out in the Loggia! Here you'll find five different sounds recorded in Adam's house. Test out a dance to Test-Tone for Landscape. Listen from the middle and the edge.
- What sounds would you choose to record to make your own musical composition? Remember the wooden record sleeves that you saw in the gallery, they are made from a headboard that would usually be found on a bed, can you link this to where these sounds have come from?
- Adam's exhibition is called Proxigean Tide, this is an extraordinary high spring tide, that with Adam’s suggestion plants the idea of the building being swallowed up by the sea. In this story, could this be what would happen if Adam’s plan for a spell works?
Finally, if you want to discover a bit more and are visiting during school summer holidays, sign up to a summer beach workshop, and use some making materials to help you explore themes in the show!
