Tate Modern - Recommended routes
We would like you to enjoy your visit to the gallery by exploring the shapes, textures in the building and also discover some artworks on display along the way!
- Come in through the Turbine Hall. Have a good look around. What do you think this building used to be? If you’re not sure – ask!
- There is an extra long escalator leading you up to the galleries on Level 3. Look around you as you go up and spot the shapes you can see.
- When you get to the top think about how many different shapes you’ve seen.
- Visit the Material Matters suite, and look at Ishi’s Light by Anish Kapoor. What do you notice about your reflection? Can you see any familiar shapes?
- Go straight ahead to the Material Gestures room. There are a lot of paintings in this room.
- Associate the paintings with sound words that you think describe the way the paintings were made (drip, splish, splosh, swish, swosh for example).
- Find the Distinguished Voices room and look at The Snail by Henri Matisse. Which colours did the artist use? Are real snails these colours?
- Find the Mark Rothko room - how does it feel to be in this room? Does it feel different to the rest of the gallery?
- Make your way back to the entrance of the Material Gestures suite. If it is the weekend, half term or it is August, you can discover the Start programme at the UBS Openings: Family Zone (Level 3 concourse). Here you can borrow games to play with your family in the gallery.
