About Workshop Conservation

Conservation’s workshop technicians are responsible for implementing key conservation measures, in relation to the structural aspects of caring for the collection. This includes repairing and adapting original frames to museum standards, and manufacturing both wooden and aluminium stretchers, aluminium honeycomb panels, reproduction frames, and transit frames which facilitate the safe handling and storage of works of art. In addition, technicians produce bespoke conservation joinery, such as display plinths and other items of display furniture.

Staff within the section have many years of experience between them, offering a diverse range of skills, applied in numerous, often inventive, ways and using a variety of methods and materials. Their work is enabled by a modern fully-equipped Machine Shop, permitting them to undertake a diverse range of challenging projects.
