 Cold Dark Matter Indepth descriptions
cold dark matter 1 1. Domestic Items
The destruction of domestic items, often made of metal, is a theme that runs through much of Parker's work. This teapot is one of her objects that fell off the White Cliffs of Dover (1992)

cold dark matter 2 2. Clog

cold dark matter 3 3. Satchel

4 4. Books
There are several books and letters in the piece. Commonplace objects transformed into the mysterious by their semi-destruction and their inclusion in an artwork.
Their words can no longer be read clearly. Their meanings have been subtily altered from being objects of information to objects of representation.

cold dark matter 5 5. Light bulb
A 200 watt light bulb is central to the work. It creates the illumination that throw the dramatic shadows onto the walls and floor around the piece.

cold dark matter 6 6. Bicycle
Bicycle parts can be glimpsed here and there among the fragments. Viewers are reminded of picasso's bulls head 1942, a sculpture pieced together from a bycicle saddle and handlebars.

cold dark matter 7 7. Wood Frame
The materials from which this piece is constructed are reminiscent of another mixed media work. To make stack (1975), Tony Cragg randomly accumulated miscellaneous obgects and materials, which he ordered into a solid, geometric structure.

cold dark matter 8 8. Toys
The shed's contents included several toys, with childhood resonances and associations The act of destruction turns them either into humorous parodies of themselves or imbues then with sinister overtones, depending on the viewer's mood.

cold dark matter 9 9. Fork
Twisted metal objects such as this fork are reminiscent of another installation by Parker. Thirty Pieces of Silver (1988-9) consists of silver-plated objects, flattened by a steam-roller and hung from wires in carefully composed groups.

In both pieces, the central theme is the destruction, or rather the metamorphosis by destruction, of familiar domestic items

cold dark matter 10 10. Fire Bucket

cold dark matter 11 11. Garden Fork
Objects normally associated with garden sheds are here too. As well as the rake there are the remains of a lawnmower, chisel and a flower pot.

Most have lost their functionality as a result of the explosion, casting eery shadows on the walls.

cold dark matter 12 12. Piles of wood
Piles of wood are sorted into a range of sizes prior to the installation of this work the wood is strung to form a boundary for the pieces within..

cold dark matter 13 13. Gumboot
