VerbalEyes: finding a voice through art

Manor Primary School, Newham

Soundscape 2008
Year 4: Class 5 and 6

Manor Primary School in Newham was inspired by Turner's painting Sun Setting over a Lake to explore water and how it connects people from London and across the world. During a boat ride from their school to Tate Britain they took photographs and recorded noises as well as creating more improvised sounds with digital equipment in the classroom. All of these elements were then used to create a sound composition of numbers and words, exploring performance, phonics and calligrams.

To accompany the sound piece the young people also created a large-scale painting using watercolours and ink applied with pippets, sponges, brushes and split reeds. This painting was then folded into a book which was displayed at Tate Britain with the sound piece to create a multi-sensory installation.

The installation travelled to the University of East London and was exhibited as part of Create it! Newham's Annual Schools Art Exhibition.

"[The children] gained confidence and status through celebrating [their] own languages." Barbara Lo Giudice, teacher

"As a teacher, it was quite challenging sometimes to work on something that had a completely different kind of structure to normal lessons - [but] I think I've learnt a lot from working on a project like this." Tim Miles, Teacher
