Creature Comfort 2008
Year 5 and 6
Inspired by the work of Bernard Meadows and Graham Sutherland, Greenslade Primary School created Creature Comfort, a series of sculptures which engage with mythology, transformation and the cyclical rhythms in nature. During a visit to Tate Britain they produced observational drawings which were later used to create 3-D maquettes of hybrid animals. Working in small groups, year five and six then developed these into a number of new species which were displayed as a silent, powerful herd around the school and at Tate Britain.
Each creature was made using a variety of materials. Many of them have been covered in cement and painted with black gloss to ensure durability.

"The visit to the gallery was superb and children experienced artworks they probably never would have encountered. They also had the opportunity to extend their vocabulary and compare and contrast artworks. The children also gained a great deal from working collaboratively and on such a large scale." Helen Nichols and Bernadette Kearney, Teachers
"[I learnt] you can make art out of anything, all art is different and you may not see it the same way as other people." Student
"[I learnt] to talk; to share ideas." Student
"It was great for myself to see the kids in a different light, particularly the children who struggle with reading and writing and to see them bloom in other areas of the curriculum." Helen Nichols, Teacher
