VerbalEyes: finding a voice through art

Charlton Manor Primary School, Greenwich

An Island in the Middle of the Ocean, Rocky 3000, Triple X and Transformer 2008
Year 6: Class 6N and Class 6BR

Charlton Manor Primary School explored unfinished art works within the Tate Collection and used their imagination to fill in the gaps. During a visit to Tate Britain the young people identified and drew unfinished elements in paintings such as Turner's Venice, the Piazzetta with the Ceremony of the Doge Marrying the Sea. These shapes were turned into three-dimensional objects and given their own meanings before being used to create a collaborative sculpture from cardboard, balloons, old clothing and plaster, which in turn became the springboard for creating futuristic stories.

"I liked plastering and getting a bit messy." Student

"The children were able to work with top artists in their field and this was an opportunity in itself. This enabled the children to produce some wonderful work and express themselves through writing and sculpture." Tim Baker, Head teacher of Charlton Manor Primary School
