Sam is a sculptor whose work takes the form of mazes or labyrinths inspired by urban journeys through the various layers of the city: the underground, the ever-changing street level and the forgotten roof tops. The empty towers and architectural follies of this latter space inspired Sam's urban residual series. Her ominous wooden towers jutting out from the wall channel the unease we can sometimes feel in the urban environment, making their viewers feel as if it was they themselves who were under observation.
Along side Sam's own studio work she also works in gallery education. Sam has led courses and classes on drawing and sculpture at many leading art galleries including Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Camden Arts Centre, The South London Gallery, The Victoria & Albert Museum and the Museum of London.
"It was fantastic to be able to collaborate with another artist. The initial stages of the [VerbalEyes project] development required us to explore different materials and experiment.even though we didn't pursue those materials in the project I may well develop those ideas in my studio for my own work in the future."
