VerbalEyes: finding a voice through art

VerbalEyes is Tate Britain's schools outreach project, giving young people the opportunity to explore art and language using the Tate collection with contemporary artists. Over 400 children from seven primary schools in the London boroughs of Newham, Greenwich and Westminster work with artists and writers on a project during which they visit Tate Britain, investigate different elements of art and language and create a final piece of collaborative artwork.

The final pieces from each school are displayed in a special VerbalEyes Exhibition at Tate Britain, which is launched with a celebratory Family Day in early June.

Continuing professional development is a key part of VerbalEyes. The focus for each school's project is developed collaboratively by the artists and teachers. Each school also takes part in a whole school teacher training day.

Tate Britain would like to thank the young people, teachers, school staff, LEA advisors, artists and writers for all their creativity, enthusiasm and commitment.

Thanks also to Tate & Lyle for their generous support.

The participating schools this year were:

Newham: Essex Primary School, Gallions Primary School and Manor Primary School
Greenwich: Charlton Manor Primary School and Greenslade Primary School
Westminster:  Edward Wilson Primary School and Essendine Primary School
