St Joachim’s RC Primary School
Match Girls and Melodrama 2006 and Global Travellers 2006
Working with writer Katherine May and artist Sarah Carne, Year 5 students explored Victorian paintings such as Augustus Leopold Egg’s Past and Present No.1 1858 and Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Little Match Girl c1848. They created scripts and their dramatisation can be seen in their work Match Girls and Melodrama. The match boxes that they have created reveal poems about Victorian street children.
Year 6 students also focused on the theme of travel. The film Global Travellers persuades us to travel to new places. It was inspired by works such as Charles Ginner’s Piccadilly Circus 1912, Edward Wadsworth’s Seaport 1923 and Simon Patterson’s The Great Bear 1992. The shoeboxes portray disastrous journeys and were developed with class teacher Amelia Dawe.
