 Alfred Pacquement

The Pilgrims' Way 1971
After studying history of art at the University of Paris, Alfred Pacquement took up the task of developing a national centre for contemporary art in France. He curated its first exhibition and, at the same time, commissioned the seventh Paris Biennale in 1971. He later joined the team at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris where he became conservator of the National Museum of Modern Art, responsible for contemporary art, and then became the Director of the National Gallery of Jeu de Paume in Paris from 1990 to 1993.

From 1996 he worked as the Director of the National College of Fine Arts before being appointed Director of the National Museum of Modern Art at the Georges Pompidou Centre in 2000 where he currently works.

As well as commissioning numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, Alfred Pacquement is also a critic and art historian. His publications include works on Frank Stella, Richard Serra, Henri Michaux, Claude Viallat and art in France.
