This image is characteristic of the artist’s fascination with African women’s bodies. The anonymity of the woman’s face is in striking contrast to the lush detail of her breasts.
Mike Phillips, curator

I find it laughable that this is called the nude because to Africans exposing your breasts was not nakedness, people walked with their breasts exposed during those times. Even when we were growing up this was not seen as nudity. This work is disturbing because they are capturing this woman and maybe she is not even aware that she is being painted. She could be a servant or a mistress.
Hassan Arero, anthropologist

She is simply stunning. I believe this portrait was done for one reason, to extol the beauty of African women.
Freddie Booker-Carson, collector
