Clough worked in her studio rather than outdoors. She rarely made preliminary sketches before starting a work, although she sometimes made detailed 'word sketches'. Throughout her life Clough took lots of photographs and used them as reminders of images she had seen or as sources of inspiration. Sometimes she reworked the photographs, cropping the images to create the effects she wanted.
