Addisalem Bizuwork is a painter based in Addis Ababa. Her paintings tell vibrant stories about everyday life in Ethiopia. Bizuwork’s canvases effortlessly combine sophisticated pictorial strategies with the decorative painting tradition of her native country.

To Live 2007
Series of five paintings

To Live is a series of small oil paintings combining text and image. Placed within the Ethiopian Christian painting tradition, Bizuwork’s recent works draw on her authentic urban way of life as well as the billboards and graffiti in contemporary Addis Ababa. She uses the Ethiopian calendar to sign her work, according to which the current year is 1999.
