Room 4 Arrow Right Appledore, North Devon

Girtin was one of the first artists to paint the scenery of the North Devon coast, following his trip in 1797. This studio view of Appledore demonstrates his ability to recapture the natural effects he observed on the spot. Girtin has left patches of the paper untouched to represent the brightly lit buildings and their reflections in the water. There can be few examples in watercolour of such a lively image of a bright summer's day unrelieved by dark shadows.
