This is Somerset House, the building which was the home of
the Royal Academy from 1780 to 1836. The Academy represented
the art establishment in Gillray's day, wielding tremendous
power. Gillray's print makes clear how many of its members
- lined up beneath Miss Provis's rainbow - were sufficiently
stupid and gullible to be taken in by such a confidence trickster.
Ominous cracks are appearing on the walls of Somerset House.
The building still stands on the Strand today; it is now
the home of the Courtauld Gallery.
