Wooded Landscape with Figures and Cows at a Watering Place (The Watering Place) As with his later drawings, Gainsborough's use of printmaking towards the end of his career flew in the face of the art world's established hierarchies. Printmaking in eighteenth-century Britain was used almost exclusively to reproduce images originally created in another medium, usually oil paint. Gainsborough was especially unusual in seeing printmaking as a creative process in its own right. |
