Life Self Portrait: A Path Beyond Indifference
Free display
This display presents a visual enquiry by young people aged 14–16 from schools in Harrow and Westminster, who worked with artists Sara Haq, Zarah Hussein and Zineb Sedira and film makers Louise Gray and Kareim el-Jamal to explore, research and begin to unravel rules often perceived to be inherent in Islamic doctrine restricting the use of representational images – specifically those of the human body.
Over a three month period this project enabled the groups to consider various ideas surrounding Islamic visual culture, faith,
history, politics and media, and their relationship to the historic, modern and contemporary works on display at Tate Britain.
This project was funded by the John
Lyons Charity.
