This is one of Gifford's largest canvases, a work he designated a 'Chief Picture' in his output, by which he meant that
it embodied important ideas in a striking way. He had just returned from a long tour of Europe and was anxious to
incorporate his experiences into a valid American landscape art. Here, in one of the earliest pictures to show Vermont's
grand scenery, his intention may have been to 'Americanise' the brilliant light of Italy. |
