John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt were key members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but their later productions have been rather overshadowed by the Symbolist style that developed from within the movement, epitomised by the art of Rossetti and Burne-Jones. Taking the two major exhibitions of Millais (Tate Britain 2007) and Hunt (Manchester 2008) as the cue for a re-appraisal of their respective careers, this symposium offers fresh interpretations of their works in terms of biography, the making of art, as well as both artists' engagement with the modern world.
The conference brings together leading academics in the area of nineteenth-century British art who will offer new interdisciplinary readings of the works of both artists.
