KS3 Fast Tracks: One Day, One Theme

During these fast-track workshops, your pupils will get the chance to think and act as artists, crafts people or designers, and will take responsibility for their own learning. They will devise art projects from their own initiative. At these unique events they might visit exhibitions, see art works not usually on show or work with specialist artists and educators.

The Environment

Explore the gallery and discover works to use in an environmental awareness project. Record your experience through videos and notes and devise a cross-curricular project: everything is possible from history to drama, science, music, literacy… you decide! You will work with ex-English teacher and BAFTA award winning filmmaker Colin Izod, Project Director of Cape Farewell Edcuation.

Animating the Abstract

Use the abstract work of British artisits such as Gillian Ayres and Peter Lanyon as the starting point for creating an animation from the point of view of the paintbrush. Participants will use simple animation techniques with digital cameras and basic computer software to create short films that explore mark making and abstraction. Your pupils will record a voiceover to link the films back to the ideas and concepts that the artists explored.

Explore the constructed art of artists such as Victor Pasmore and Mary and Kenneth Martin who used factory-made materials to create works that lie somewhere between sculpture and painting. create an art work that is inspired by their interest in material, form, architecture and the built environment around us.

What's in a Gallery?

Discover the galleries from a different viewpoint. By learning about the role of curators, interpretation staff and other gallery employees, you will think about the gallery displays, making connections between works, themes and contexts. Students can then plan an exhibition for one of Tate's galleries, using works from the Tate Collection that link to their own interests and current focuses at school.

During this workshop pupils will see artists' books from the Tate Library Collection that could transform their idea of what a book can be, what it looks like or is about. They may never see books in the same way again! Be ready for a fun day of investigations and making led by book artist Tracey Bush.
