Babette's Feast

Friday 6 October 2006, 20.00

Based on a story by Isak Dinesen, Babette's Feast tells the story of Babette Hertsard (Stéphane Audran), a nineteenth-century Parisian political refugee and her relationship with two elderly and religious sisters (Bodil Kjer and Birgitte Federspiel). The sisters, who had given up their chances of romance and fame, have taken refuge in religion and live a puritan life in a small village on the remote and beautiful coast of Jutland.

Babette spends 14 years with the sisters as their cook, and her only link to her former life is a lottery ticket that a friend in Paris renews for her every year. One day she wins the lottery and with the money prepares a delicious dinner for the small congregation. More than just an epicurean delight, the feast is an outpouring of Babette's gratitude and demonstrates the sensual and transformative power of food.
