'There are but five perfect colours.'
– Nicholas Hilliard

Hans Holbein's iconic portrait miniatures embody many of the elaborate codes and value systems embedded in sixteenth-century materials and techniques.

Led by artist Jane Elliot, this two-day workshop explores the Tudor portrait miniature within the context of the Holbein in England exhibition. Working directly from a model and with step-by-step tuition on preparatory drawing, annotation and the use of gouache, participants have the unique opportunity to produce their own jewel-like image.

Discussions and demonstrations explore the sources, philosophy, alchemy and meaning of the Tudor palette with particular emphasis on the work of Hans Holbein, Nicholas Hilliard and Lucas Horenbout.
