The Lives and Letters of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell
Thursday 15 June 2006, 14.00–17.00
This study day uses the Tate Archive’s rich resource of correspondence, writings, photographs, art work and artefacts to form a detailed picture of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.
The session is led by Maggie Humm, author of Snapshots of Bloomsbury: The Private Lives of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell (Tate Publishing, 2006), and explores rarely seen photographs – both amateur and professional – that cast new light on the private lives of Woolf and Bell. A selection of these photographs from the Tate Archive is introduced by Tate Archivist Sue Breakell, along with broader archival material, including a selection of their prolific correspondence that illuminates the historical, cultural and artistic milieux of their circle, as well as their domestic lives in Bloomsbury and beyond.
