1987     John Miller + Partners appointed to provide master plan for Millbank site
1992 Donation from Sir Edwin and Lady Manton enables planning to commence on the north-west quadrant of Millbank as part of the first phase of the master plan
1993 Design for the NWQ completed and planning permission granted
1994 Advent of the National Lottery enables plans to become more ambitious, by increasing the scope of the project and adding the re-landscaping of the external areas and front gardens
1995 Design for the Tate Britain Centenary Development is completed
Jun 1996 Lottery application submitted to Heritage Lottery Fund
Nov 1996 Planning permission received
Feb 1997 £18.75 million is awarded from the Heritage Lottery Fund
May 1997 Mace appointed as Construction Managers
Oct 1997 Galleries and office areas in the north-west quadrant are cleared
Dec 1997 Site handed to Mace
Jan 1998 Site preparations begin, hoardings etc are erected and the removal of marble begins, which takes until June
Mar 1998 Existing services isolated prior to strip out
Jun 1998 Excavation begins - excavation goes 7m below ground and 2m below the water table and occurs around and under spaces containing works of art and the public. Archaeological survey takes place
Sep 1998 Lord and Lady Sainsbury of Preston Candover donate money to enable the building of the Linbury Galleries
Dec 1998 Commencement of concreting to form basement
Jan 1999 The biggest concrete pour of 360m3 in one day
Apr 1999 Erection of steel frame to new galleries commences. 180 tonnes of steel are erected in the next two months. Existing gallery floors removed
Jun 1999 Cleaning of exterior stonework begins
Jul 1999 Erection of internal blockwork walls to new galleries start
Oct 1999 External landscaping commences
Jan 2000 External stone repairs and cleaning complete
Feb 2000 External ramp and staircase construction begins
Apr 2000 Flooding occurs within the basement plant room causing damage to installed plant and equipment leading to a delay in completion of the project
Jul 2000 Lawns laid
Aug 2000 Front landscape handed over
Aug 2001 Construction Project complete, site handed back to Tate for fitting out
Sept 2001 Art Installation begins
30 Oct 2001 HRH The Prince of Wales officially opens the Tate Britain Centenary Development
