Described by Finberg as a ‘river’ subject,1 this ‘colour beginning’ evokes a rough structure, which may be the wooden causeway and railings of the somewhat ramshackle Jarvis’s Landing Place, which ran north across the Great Beach at Margate and out along a jetty into the sea. It is seen clearly in several of the more conventional drawings in the present subsection, and in the background of a watercolour study (Tate D36017; Turner Bequest CCCLXIV 173).
The cursory treatment perhaps evokes the wet beach in the foreground, with waves, clouds or even the smoke from a steamer beyond. If not Margate, the subject may be a groyne or breakwater witnessed elsewhere or recalled in the studio.
